Out with the old...

...Ways of doing things that is. So I'm feverishly looking for a job. It is not easy. With the state of the economy right now I know that I am not alone searching for a good gig. Any gig, really. Other than resourcing my (many) talents. I've decided to take things up a notch. Gone are the days of relying on a good education. Mind you, that is very VERY important and I love all the institutions I attended. However, I realize that school is merely the launch pad. In order to really 'take off' one must really work after graduation(s). The job market now is especially competitive and so that means finding ways to stand out. I am up for the challenge. My creative juices over floweth! This week me and my camera man ( shout out to iShotYa! Yuh large in de biz! ) filmed a video mission statement in the form of a mini movie. Fun! Check out the gawdy pic of me - image is nothing!
I feel energized that I am utilizing my power! Well, I don't have a job yet but I feel very very sure! I'll be back with more power! More creativity! More stand-out-ness!

xoxo!

What Choo Talking 'Bout, Willis?

So last Friday I had the pleasure of having dinner and drinks with some friends. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal and even more so the company. I was sad to see the night come to an end. I was even more sad when I was caught in traffic - due to construction - on my way to the Don Valley Parkway. While sitting in my car on Bloor St. I decided maybe it isn't so bad to be caught in the jam at that particular junction. I did have the pretty holiday store windows to keep me entertained. I looked to my left and noticed a dress in the Zara window that would look much better on me than that mannequin and made a mental note to go there at some point to try it on. I looked to my right and noticed a young woman huddled and shivering on the side walk and immediately felt that guilt knot I get in my stomach whenever I see a homeless person. We've got to do better, Toronto, I thought. Then I noticed another young woman beside her...and then another....and then a big group of women laughing and having fun with their hats and gloves on and in lawn chairs? What? Wait. These women aren't out on the streets escaping an abusive home, begging for change from passer bys. No don't tell me. Sitting outside at midnight is completely voluntary? In November? What could be worth it? Other than Michael Jackson concert tickets ( R.I.P MJ!)? Then I remembered, the launch of Jimmy Choo for H&M was scheduled for the next morning, November 14th. So now I am in complete bewilderment! These women are risking frost bite to line up ALL nite just to covet the shoes Carrie Bradshaw made famous? Why is THAT important to have those shoes? Just because of the name? Is fashion really that vital in the lives of young women these days? Even now in the midst of recession? Do we have to succumb to every little marketing ploy and buy buy buy? And what makes these shoes SO special anyway? Just because a couple of famous people wear them so we must then acquire the same in order to be like the 'acclaimed'? Puhleeze. I've been laid off and I know the ladies of Sex in the City or Lipstick Jungle could care less about what shoes I wear to my job interview. And I really don't care whether any cast member of any defunct or current tv show approves of my attire or not. Ladies, we are more than our shoes. It is not about what we put on our feet but more where our feet will take us. Let's stop living up to the stereotype that we care more about esthetics than our character. Now. If you'll excuse me. There's a dress at Zara with my name on it....

Woman of the Year!!!

Michie O!!! The style! The charm! The hotness that is Michelle Obama! My goodness....I can hardly stand it. She graced the cover of the December issue of Glamour magazine and also recieved the publication's highest honour ( along with 11 other fantastic females ) as Woman of the Year. Michelle Obama. The fashionable First Lady was applauded for styling herself for the cover shoot and gave sound advice for readers, " Don't look at the bank book or the title. Look at the heart. Look at the soul". I love everything about the Harvard Law School grad. But what is more than her flair for fashion or romance rules, is what she represents. Michelle Obama represents possibility. Michelle Obama makes it possible for someone of humble beginnings to go to Ivy league schools and to eventually get to the White House. Michelle Obama makes it possible for little girls to dream BIG. More than anything, Michelle Obama makes it possible to break the molds that the media give black women. Now, the portrayal of the angry, over-sexed, weave wearing black woman may be long from over on television or in movies but at least there is now something else. Thankfully, Clair of the Huxtable house had the reign for a time in the make believe world but we were long over due for her majesty Michelle of White House; in the real world. Luckily for me, I've had many Michelle Obamas in my life. My mother, grandmothers, aunts and especially the friends I affectionately call my 'sisters'. These femme phenoms have helped me turn dreams to reality. It is because of them I keep my shoulders square and hold my head up high and know that all things are possible. Too bad that all these women don't get to be on magazine covers. That's where Michelle comes in. Not just showing us, but reminding us that our possibility is a reality...

It's your media, darling....

A Room of One's Own

Virginia Woolf couldn't have said it better! Even with her bouts of depression and less than enviable fashion sense, lets face it, chic was just plain fierce for her mantra. We all need a place of our own to create freely. To my dear readers and soon-to-be loyal subscribers, I am thrilled to create this space for me and you! *curtesys*. I will dish on current events, movers and shakers and what I feel is "buzz" worthy in general.
I will be back with my first official post in a few...

Your media darling,
